10 Events In Metro Atlanta For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

There will be a number of events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month held throughout metro Atlanta in October.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Georgia and accounts for 30 percent of new cancers in women, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many Georgia-based organizations will be raising money and awareness throughout the month. Here are 10 events happening near Atlanta.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk 

Dates: Oct. 13-15

Location: Atlanta neighborhoods

Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta will be involved with many fundraising and awareness events this month, and the organization has plenty of other events scheduled on its website. However, one of the biggest events of this month is the 3-Day Walk. The walk is 60 miles long, and walkers must agree to raise at least $2,300 to participate.

Oglethorpe University Volleyball Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend

Dates: Oct. 13-14

Location: Oglethorpe University

The Oglethorpe University volleyball team is spreading awareness for breast cancer and raising money at their home games scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Fans can purchase pink smoothies and the volleyball team will do a burpee for every dollar that is raised.

Posh for a Purpose Breast Cancer 5K

Date: Oct. 14

Time: Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Location: Decatur

Posh for a Purpose is a Stone Mountain-based organization that raises money for various causes. This month, the organization will be partnering with Susan G. Komen and Hope House of Atlanta to hold a 5K. Registration is $20 per walker, and t-shirts will be sold for $10 each. Proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen. There will also be food trucks and inflatables for the kids.

Morehouse College 18th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Date: Oct. 14

Time: Walk starts at 8 a.m.

Location: Morehouse College

Every year Morehouse students, community members and people from local churches and other local colleges come together to participate in Morehouse’s annual breast cancer awareness walk. This year the college organized a 3-mile walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Cancer and The Pink Frog Foundation, Inc. Registration is $25 for nonstudents.

Kicking Out Breast Cancer Kickball Tournament

Date: Oct. 14

Time: noon-8 p.m.

Location: Marietta

Susan G. Komen is partnering with 5 Star Sports to raise awareness at a kickball tournament held at the new 5 Star Sports Franklin Gateway Sports Complex. 5 Star Sports will donate $25 to Susan G. Komen for each team that registers for the event.

Breastival at Emory

Date: Oct. 21

Time: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Location: Emory University Hospital

The Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University is partnering with Sisters by Choice to offer breast exams and education on breast cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

“Uniting DeKalb for a Cure” Walk 

Date: Oct. 21

Time: Walk starts at 9 a.m.

Location: Northlake Mall in Tucker

DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond will be joining citizens at Northlake Mall for the second annual DeKalb Breast Cancer Awareness run/walk. Proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen, to be redirected back to initiatives in the DeKalb community.

Atlanta Making Strides Walk

Date: Oct. 21

Time: Check-in opens at 7 a.m.

Location: SunTrust Park

Survivors, caretakers and community members will be raising awareness for breast cancer and money for the American Cancer Society at the 9.6-mile walk starting at SunTrust Park. The event will also include an opening ceremony before the walk, which begins at 9 a.m.

Ultimate Pink Party: Zumba Extravaganza 

Date: Oct. 28

Time: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Location: Riverdale

The Riverdale Centre for the Arts, Business & Leisure Services is offering a free Zumba class to spread awareness for breast cancer. Attendees are asked to wear pink.

Cruise For A Cause

Date: Oct. 28

Time: Meet up begins at 8:30 a.m.

Location: Cumberland Mall and Southlake Mall

A muscle car club called OutKast Vettes LLC will be giving rides to those who donate to Thriving and Surviving Breast Cancer Support Group. Donations can be made through the foundation’s website, thrivingandsurviving.org. The drive will start at Cumberland Mall at 8 a.m., then others will be picked up at Southlake Mall at 9:30 a.m. The ride will end at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge.
