Internships at Public Broadcasting Atlanta

The internship program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about broadcasting and the supporting areas of Radio and Television.

PBA offers internship opportunities in the following areas:

Internship Opportunities:

Radio News Internship

This individual will work with news director and staff to help meet daily news obligations, research news topics and for potential interviewees, transcribe interviews gathered from reporters. Write and rewrite stories found in press releases, newspapers and similar publications. Some reporting is required for this post. For this reason, each intern is required to have access to their own transportation. Equipment will be provided.

Preferred Skills: Students are expected to be in pursuit of journalism or similar broadcast related degree. Students who have an interest and/or background in radio journalism, writing, or audio editing will be most seriously considered.

Radio Production Internship

This individual will work with news director and staff to help meet daily news obligations, research news topics and for potential interviewees, transcribe interviews gathered from reporters. Marketing Internship

The Marketing Intern supports the initiatives of the Marketing/Business Strategy team as well as Community Engagement. Responsibilities include doing research to support strategy development for radio, tv and digital. Additionally, responsibilities could include developing marketing communications for cross-content initiatives and radio programs and helping plan and execute community engagement events. In addition, help manage the promotion planning and messaging process for promotional priorities within organizational assets.

Preferred Skills: Students are expected to be in pursuit of a marketing or related degree. Students should have strong written and verbal communication, organizational and project management skills. Those who have a passion and/or background in marketing and media and have will be most seriously considered.

Television Production & Programming

As an intern on our TV production team, you might focus on research, writing, editing or studio prep. Interns working in this department will be expected to help producers in the field, in the studio, and video editing on professional editing platforms. Responsibilities may include: Refining editing skills using Avid, creating promotional pieces for PBA30’s promotions department, camera operation, assistant editing, or exporting files in a variety of formats for broadcast and web. Those who have a passion and/or background in production and editing will be most seriously considered.

Digital & Social Media Internship

Intern will receive hands on experience creating digital first content for PBA’s three websites — wabe.org, pba.org, and atlantaplanit.org. The intern would learn what it takes to help content succeed by participating in PBA’s social media strategy. An emphasis in social media would mean working with the social media editor to determine the best strategies to implement on WABE and other PBA accounts.

General Skills/Requirements: Strong knowledge of AP style, grammar, and spelling. Excellent writing, research and fact-checking skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Attention to detail is a must. Understanding of SEO. Ability to communicate tactfully with others.

Preferred Skills (social media emphasis): Strong understanding of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and other social media platforms is required. Ability to analyze trends and data or a willingness to learn. Interest in social media and journalism. Ability to film and edit video is a plus.

Photography

Interns will receive hands-on field experience photographing subjects around Atlanta, covering breaking news and long form features with WABE’s reporters and producers. Interns will also be able to work with the staff to create a photography essay.

Skills/Requirements: Understanding of photographic equipment and good composition. Strong portfolio of published images. Ability to edit images using Adobe Creative Suite. Interviewing skills. Excellent writing and research skills. Ability to meet tight deadlines and work independently. Experience editing video is a plus.

Membership/Individual Giving

Interns working in this department will be expected to assist with research for concert opportunities, handling pre-concert meet and greets, special events, sweepstakes and giveaways.  Interns may also be expected to assist with television and radio production, including, but not limited to in-studio production, field-production, operating field and/or studio cameras, serve as floor director. Interns may also have the opportunity to help with social media, PBS and NPR programming content research, pledge drives, and fundraising mailings. Preference will be shown to candidates who demonstrate a passion for public television and radio.


Qualifications:

Candidates must be a student: College or Graduate School. The internship you are applying for should benefit your major/minor area of study or degree. Interns are expected to be available between 10 to 29 hours a week during an 8-12 week internship period. Internships are for academic credit and or must be approved by your school or university.
