Activists Want More Details About Officer-Involved Shootings

Some Atlanta activists want more transparency when it comes to officer-involved shootings.

The focus is last month’s fatal shooting of a young black man, DeAundre Phillips, by an Atlanta police officer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is looking into the shooting. It hasn’t released video of the incident. It also hasn’t made the officer’s name public due to concerns for his safety.

A couple dozen protesters, including Gerald Griggs, objected to that Tuesday at an Atlanta city council committee.

“We’re sitting here waiting on law enforcement to say they do not feel safe. The community does not feel safe,” Griggs said. “And we need to restore that trust back into the community.”

Protesters called on the city council to pass legislation that would require police departments to release any videos of fatal shootings.

Council Member Kwanza Hall introduced legislation like that last year. The city council committee said it will review it in a work session next week.

Meanwhile, Atlanta’s police chief said the GBI plans to release the video of Phillips’ shooting as soon as Wednesday.
