Acworth Works To Revive Downtown With New Recreation Center

In just a few years, Acworth residents will no longer have to drive to the middle of Cobb County to go to a public gym.
As part of Acworth’s larger downtown revitalization plans, the city was approved to build a $11 million recreation facility next year.
Through the SPLOST Cobb County voters approved in 2014, Cobb County is pitching in $8.5 million of the cost and the city will cover the remaining $2.5 million.
“This is a vision that the mayor and council have had for 10 or 15 years, that’s coming to fruition right now and there’s a lot of things coming together at one time,” said James Albright, director of the city of Acworth’s Parks and Recreation Department. “So there is a lot of excitement.”
The facility will be the first public recreation center in the city.
It is expected to include two large basketball courts, indoor tracks and meeting rooms which could hold up to 250 people.
The recreation center is expected to be completed by the summer of 2018. 
“We’re a rapidly growing city and a lot of the feedback that we receive from kids to senior citizens has led to the concept of this facility,” Albright said. “And it wouldn’t be just for basketball. It would be for athletics and special programming.”
The city is also wrapping up more than $4 million-worth of construction on road improvements, expanding its 120-acre Logan Farm Park by 15 acres and historic preservation of the Historic House in downtown Acworth.
