Alabama Man Fatally Shot Outside Ponce Kroger

Police are investigating the killing of an Alabama construction worker outside a grocery store on Atlanta’s east side.

Atlanta Police spokesman Greg Lyon says the man was killed outside a Kroger on Ponce de León Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 38-year-old Joshua Richey of Hayden, Alabama.

Police say Richey caught the shooter trying to break into his vehicle. The shooter later fled with a second man in a different car.

Richey’s co-worker, Jason Shelton, tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the two were working at the store when Richey spotted an unknown man inside their pickup truck. Shelton said Richey approached the truck and the man inside shot through the window, killing him.

Atlanta Police Lt. Charles Hampton called it a crime of opportunity.
