The Alliance Theatre’s production of “Small Mouth Sounds” takes place at a silent meditation retreat. Six escapees from the city head to the woods with the hopes of healing and self-discovery. Alliance Theatre artistic director Susan V. Booth is directing the play and spoke with Lois Reitzes about this quiet, but self-reflective play.

“We all had to figure it out together; no body was the teacher, no body was the student. In the play, I have seven fellow travelers, actors I work with often and I could trust their willingness to put their personal stories on stage,” Booth said.

The play hopes to declutter the noise that surrounds us on a daily basis and have a raw (but silent) reflection on the issues and struggles that trouble us.

The performance is on the Hertz Stage of the Alliance Theatre now through Oct. 27.
