Annual Tiny House Festival Returns To Decatur

Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett will be one of the event’s honored guests along with keynote speaker Steve Nygren, who will discuss what the tiny house movement means to Atlanta.

Nygren is the founder and president of Serenbe, a community located about 40 minutes southwest of downtown Atlanta in the city of Chattahoochee Hills. According to Serenbe’s website, Nygren built the community to preserve the rural Chattahoochee Hills area through sustainable living, allowing urban life to coexist with nature.

Another guest speaker is Atlanta City Planning Commissioner Tim Keane, who will discussing microliving in the city on a panel.

Attendees can learn how to de-clutter in one of the festival’s most popular sessions: “Downsize and Organize Your Way to Happiness.”

“What makes people really happy in life are experiences and people,” said Tiny House Atlanta founder and CEO Will Johnston. “This is a beginner’s course of understanding what it would take for them to start downsizing their own lives to be more happy, whether it’s getting rid of clothes or getting rid of clutter, or just understanding what they really need to make themselves happy.”

In addition to panel discussions and lectures, the festival will showcase around 25 tiny houses that were constructed by vendors from all over the Southeast. Local and national vendors will also showcase products made for tiny homes.

The relaxed, family-friendly event will also provide a food court with food trucks, bicycle parking and a DJ.

In addition to the festival, Tiny House Atlanta is partnering with Georgia Tiny Rentals to raise money to bring awareness to the tiny house movement. On Oct. 2, Georgia Tiny Rentals will be giving away a 269-square-foot house.

“[Attendees] are just very excited and interested to learn what this means to them and what it could do for their lives,” Johnston said.
