APS Requires Universal Masking, Conducts Surveillance Testing Amid Ongoing Health Crisis

It’s been a little under two weeks since Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students returned to school for in-person class instruction.

Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring, the district’s top leader, says even though the school community is navigating in a new environment, it has a few advantages due to the lessons the district learned last year amid the ongoing health crisis.

“The physical coming together only increases the opportunities for how COVID is spread, so thus increases our responsibility of what we need to do,” explained Herring on Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look.”

Herring told show host Rose Scott that APS is practicing universal masking and some have voiced concerns about not wanting to wear masks, but many are in support of the mask mandate.

The veteran educator further discussed the district’s back-to-school plan, the APSProtects approach, surveillance testing and other ongoing safety measures to keep staff, students and teachers safe.
