Atlanta Airport TSA Collected $10,600 In Loose Change

Travelers at Atlanta’s airport left behind more than $10,000 in loose change at security checkpoints in fiscal year 2014.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Transportation Security Administration collected $10,630.43 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

TSA Spokesman Ross Feinstein says the TSA got authority from Congress in 2005 “to expend unclaimed money for security operations.”

The TSA says it makes every effort to make sure passengers get any items they leave at checkpoints, but some items end up going unclaimed. Money that’s left behind is documented and turned into the agency’s financial office.

Nationally, the TSA collected more than $675,000 in loose change in the 2014 fiscal year. TSA collected $10,457.51 in Atlanta in fiscal 2013 and $11,611.66 in fiscal 2012.
