Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery says deciding to opt out of the 2020 WNBA season to focus on social justice reform is one of the clearest decisions that she’s ever made.

“I kind of already had something pulling at my heartstrings that I needed to be somewhere else,” the 11-year veteran said.

Montgomery, who has earned two WNBA championship rings and a Sixth Woman of the Year award, says she consulted with her parents, prayed and talked with her head coach before announcing via Twitter in mid-June that she’d be taking the season off to focus on off-the-court issues.

On Monday’s edition on “Closer Look,” Montgomery talks with host Rose Scott about the police killing of George Floyd, recent protests and an open letter that she recently wrote to U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, an Atlanta Dream co-owner.

During the conversation, Montgomery also talks with Scott about leading an upcoming voter registration campaign, helping college students and an initiative to save Morris Brown College.
