Atlanta Mayor Announces Support For Gay Marriage

After years of opposition to gay marriage, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed today expressed support for it by signing a resolution endorsing marriage equality.

Last week, by an 11-2 vote, Atlanta’s city council formally endorsed gay marriage. Alex Wan, the council’s lone gay member, sponsored it.

Sonji Jacobs, the mayor’s spokeswoman, said Wan’s resolution played a major role.

“This is something he’s been thinking about for a long time. Councilman Wan’s resolution, I think, moved him, and as he thought about it more, he thought it was the right time.”

The mayor signed the resolution as councilman Wan looked on.

In the past, Mayor Reed has stood opposed to gay marriage, saying he was “wrestling” with his beliefs. Rather, he expressed support for civil unions. In 2004, as a state legislator, Reed voted against a constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriage and civil unions.

Jacobs says the mayor ultimately changed his position on marriage because he thought it was the right thing to do.

“Atlanta has a real tradition of being a welcoming, tolerant, and inclusive city so I really think this speaks to the heart of Atlanta, and I think that’s something that very much influenced Mayor Reed’s decision.”

Jacobs says the city of Atlanta already recognizes domestic partnerships in defining health and pension benefits and has strong anti-discrimination policies in place. She says the city will continue to protect the rights of all of its citizens.
