The 45th annual Atlanta Pride Festival kicks off this weekend. Organizers expect 250,000 to 300,000 people to attend over the course of the weekend.

It’s the largest event in the country for the weekend’s National Coming Out Day and the biggest pride festival in the Southeast, said Atlanta Pride executive director Jamie Green-Fergerson.

“We combine sort of Southern hospitality and the artistic and activist sides of the LGBTQ community in the festival,” she said. “So it’s just a lot of fun, but it’s also really laid back and creative.”

The festival begins Friday night at the Georgia Aquarium – though there are a couple events on Thursday. The parade is Sunday afternoon. There will be events all weekend in Piedmont Park, including the Dyke March and the Trans March on Saturday.

“We’re doing all of the old favorites, but we started some new things as well,” said Green-Fergerson. Some of those newer ideas, she said, are Gray Pride, for seniors; more programming for the trans community; and events focused on families and young people.

Atlanta Pride is rain-or-shine. You can watch the parade live on 11alive.com on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
