A federal policy of separating some immigrant families at the border sparked protests around the country Friday — including here in Atlanta.

About 100 people gathered outside the Atlanta Immigration Court downtown. The protesters chanted and held signs saying “reunite families.”

Alma Calderon, who is originally from Mexico, brought her four kids to the protest.

“This needs to be stopped: separating families.” Calderon said. “I don’t want the same to happen to me or any other people I know.”

Last month, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called for a “zero tolerance” approach to immigration.

He said anyone who crossed the border illegally would be prosecuted and separated from their children.

At the protest, Shannan Reaze disagreed.

She said families are allowed to come here to seek asylum, and they need to be able to take care of each other.

“If you care about having a strong society, you care about strong families,” she said.

Protests were held in other cities, including Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.
