“I don’t have good vibes,” Atlanta comedian Samm Severin promises on the opening of her first album, “Stoned and Sad.”

It’s the sort of self-deprecation that she goes on to undercut with absurdist humor and astute observations on celebrity, drug addiction, and social media.

“Starting out, I think it was really cathartic for me to say things that I was ashamed of,” she says. “The first time that I was able to say out loud ‘I was a drug addict for many years,’ was like ‘Oh! I was! Wow, I said that, I can move past that now.’”

“I definitely see it as a strength and a gift,” she says of her sense of humor, “but first I think it was a defense mechanism.”

Severin got her start in stand-up at the Star Bar in Little Five Points. She chose to record the album in Athens (“It’s all Georgia, baby!” she says) produced by Chunklet Industries founder Henry Owings, who has previously produced releases by comedians Patton Oswalt and Zach Galifianakis.

“Stoned and Sad” is available through iTunes and other digital platforms.
