When composer James Oliverio was commissioned by virtuoso timpani players Mark and Paul Yancich, he considered many factors, such as giving equal time to each brother, the pitch range of the timpani and the rich musical legacy of the Yancich family.

As Oliverio’s “Dynasty: Double Timpani Concerto” rolls through the movements titled “Impetuous,” “Naivete,” “Interlude,” “Ancestors Within” and, finally, “Destiny,” we are not only taken on an emotional journey, but also one of discovery, especially for those not accustomed to drum solos at symphony performances.

Oliverio spoke with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes about how his relationship with the Yancich brothers and the timpani began.

The performance, directed by Robert Spano, with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will be Thursday and Saturday evening at the Woodruff Arts Center. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony will also be on the program.
