Atlanta Symphony Program Is ‘Flute At Its Supreme Best’

A dreamy Debussy Nocturne, a 20th century flute concerto and a peaceful Requiem round out this weekend’s Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concerts.
The all-French program is lead by principal guest conductor Donald Runnicles. The orchestra’s principal flutist, Christina Smith, is center stage as the featured soloist. She’ll be accompanied by the orchestra in André Jolivet’s Flute Concerto, a piece closely associated with 20th-century superstar flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal.
Both Smith and Runnicles spoke with Lois Reitzes on “City Lights,” and Runnicles remarked that the French seem to have a knack for writing music for the breathy soprano woodwind: “This is the flute at its supreme best.”
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performed this all-French program Thursday evening and will perform again Saturday evening at 8.
