Atlanta Symphony’s Piedmont Park Concerts Begin Thursday

Joseph Young with “City Lights” producer Erin Wright

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s season has come to end, but that end marks the beginning of their summer concert programming.

The Piedmont Park concerts began in June 1976 under the direction of Robert Shaw. Since then, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has performed over 100 concerts for over 100,000 audience members in the park. That tradition continues with three programs scheduled this month.

The Piedmont Park concerts are free, but tickets must be reserved online. The first concert Thursday is already sold out, but tickets for the June 18 and June 25 concerts can be reserved the Friday before the show.

ASO Assistant Conductor Joseph Young will be on the podium for these concerts.

Each concert will be different with repertoire ranging from Igor Stravinsky’s ”Firebird Suite” to Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Young will also conduct the annual ASO Side-By-Side Concert, where the symphony’s musicians are joined by Atlanta-area student musicians. The Side-By-Side Concert takes place Wednesday at Symphony Hall.
