Is the best botanical garden in the U.S. located right here in Atlanta? USA TODAY’s 10BEST series is choosing readers’ favorites, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden is in the running.
Nineteen botanical gardens across the U.S. are competing in the 10BEST. The top 10 will be selected through online polls. Voting is open through March 27 at 12 p.m. Winners will be announced March 31.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden is located in the heart of Midtown next to Piedmont Park. It includes 30 acres of outdoor gardens plus a nationally respected collection of species orchids in the Fuqua Orchid Center.
This March and April is the Garden’s annual “Atlanta Blooms” flower display.
More than 30,000 tulips join thousand of daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses in bloom throughout the grounds.
According to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, planning for this year’s “Atlanta Blooms” display began a year ago as last spring’s tulips were in full bloom. Garden staff collected a selection of color varieties and determined which colors to pair for the 2017 display.
Each year’s display also features new color varieties. New additions for 2017 include the red “Spryng,” the red and orange “Avignon” and the multi-colored Fritillaria tulips.
Other elements visitors can see at the Atlanta Botanical Garden include the Canopy Walk, which weaves through the treetops of the Storza Woods; the Edible Garden and Outdoor Kitchen, which are home to chef demonstrations and tasting opportunities; and the award-winning Children’s Garden, which features outdoor play areas and occasional special events for families.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden has won a number of awards over the years, including local recognition and a spot in Country Gardens Magazine’s 2012 “Our Favorite Public Gardens” feature.
You can vote for the Atlanta Botanical Garden in USA TODAY’s 10BEST Reader’s Choice through Monday, March 27 at 12 p.m.
