Brenda Bynum On The ‘Strange Fruit’ Of Author Lillian Smith

You may not have heard of Georgian author Lillian Smith.  She was one of the first prominent white Southerners to speak out publicly against racial segregation in the 1930s and 40s.

Already seen as somewhat of a radical, it was her book, “Strange Fruit,” which brought Smith the most controversy. Her name has slipped from the pantheon of Southern writers, but Smith’s story has been adapted into a one-woman show by Atlanta actor Brenda Bynum.

Lois Reitzes sat down with Bynum to talk about Smith and her show.

Bynum will be giving a free afternoon performance of her one-woman show ”Jordan Is So Chilly: An Encounter with Lillian Smith” Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Theatrical Outfit. We have details at Atlanta PlanIt.
