After more than a decade, the city of Atlanta is finally going to demolish three empty, blighted properties just west of I-285 on Bolton Road.

City Council approved the project at its meeting Monday.

Council member Dustin Hillis introduced the legislation and said it took time to find the funding for such a large project. It will cost $800,000 to tear down the more than 70 apartments. More than half of that will come from a federal grant.

“This will basically be the largest code enforcement demolition ever done by the city of Atlanta,” he said. “So I’ll be looking forward to working with the mayor and the code enforcement team to set a date, kick off this demolition and have a party.”

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has said that eliminating blight is a priority of her administration. She announced an anti-blight initiative in April.

Hillis said blighted buildings are a fire hazard, and these apartments have caught fire several times.

“Every time our firefighters get called out there it endangers their lives. We’ve had firefighters fall through floors, had roofs fall on them and get injured. So it’s a priority to have these taken down.”

He said the properties are also “keeping the neighborhood down” and have been an eyesore in his district for more than a decade.
