City Council Declares Monday ‘Killer Mike Day’ In Atlanta

Happy Killer Mike Day, Atlanta.
On Monday, The Atlanta City Council named the day in honor of Michael Render, also known as rapper “Killer Mike,” according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Killer Mike was honored for his music and activism, according to the newspaper. Killer Mike – who is one half of the hip hop group Run the Jewels and a member of the Atlanta hip-hop collective the Dungeon Family – was also honored in March by the state Senate for his involvement in the city’s water infrastructure.
Last September, a giant drill designed to build an emergency back-up water supply for the city was named “Driller Mike” in the rapper’s honor.
Killer Mike has been outspoken about his desire to improve Atlanta.
In March, he told the Senate, “Our children deserve decent housing. Gentrification should not make children poor.”
“Our school systems deserve more attention. Our teachers deserve more money,” he said. “Our firemen deserve more money. And our policemen deserve more than new guns. They deserve to have enough cops on the street to be involved in the community.”
He echoed those beliefs Monday at City Hall.
“I challenge you to make sure the Beltline has affordable housing,” he told local lawmakers.
Lawmakers praised Killer Mike for the work he has done for the city.
“I respect you in so many ways,” City Councilman Andre Dickens, said, according to the AJC. “You represent the ATL well.”
State Sen. Vincent Ford said Monday “I appreciate this brother because he inspires so many people,” according to the newspaper.
