Comedian Julie Goldman Performs At Out Front Theatre

Comedian Julie Goldman is blunt about her identity and about just about anything. In an interview with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes, she described herself as super gay, butch lesbian. And her comedy?

“I’m very inappropriate. I’m not politically correct. I’m not sensitive as a comedian. I’m not precious. I’m very aggressive. I’m raw, and that’s just how it’s gotta go,” she said.

Goldman performed her first stand-up set at age 15. And, earlier in her career, Goldman said that her style of comedy wasn’t always well received, even by primarily lesbian audiences. That’s changed, she explained, because of the changing times.

“My problem was that I would make fun of lesbians!” she said. “They feel like they’ve been the brunt of the joke for so long that they don’t want to see one of their own pandering to that. That’s totally different now, I have no issues with lesbian audiences. There’s a sense of relief in the last 10 years of rights and visibility. And when you feel like less of a victim, you’re more capable of laughing.”

Goldman performs stand-up around the country now, but she’s also made appearances on a wide-variety of televisions shows. She was a member of the cast on of “The Big Gay Sketch Show.” More recently, she’s appeared on the new season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and was part of Bravo’s reality series “The People’s Couch” and “Vanderpump Rules After Show.”  Off-screen, Goldman hosts a podcast called “Dumb, Gay Politics.”

Goldman performs this Saturday, Dec. 30 at Out Front Theatre at 8 p.m.
