Congressman David Scott On The Nation’s Farming Industry

Congressman David Scott plans to have Black farmers speak to Congress about challenges they face.

Congressman David Scott

Georgia Congressman David Scott chairs the House Agriculture Committee in Washington D.C., and he represents Georgia’s 13th Congressional District.

Scott recently spoke to WABE’s host of “Morning Edition,” Lisa Rayam, over the telephone.

He said he wants to ensure that farmers, Black farmers in particular, have a voice in reclaiming an industry that has not always been fair and an industry that is now riddled by the coronavirus pandemic.

But, Scott says the challenges and inequities faced were in place long before the pandemic and are systemic.

This spring, Scott has plans to get Black farmers in front of Congress to talk about some of the most pressing challenges of losing their land.

The loss of Black-owned farmland is a major concern, and studies show they are losing their land at much higher rates than white and Hispanic farmers.
