Councilwoman Mary Norwood On The Adair Park School Controversy

Atlanta City Councilwoman Mary Norwood has never been shy of controversial topics. Now, she is taking on disagreements regarding the historic Adair Park community in southwest Atlanta.

Community members want a developer to purchase the George Adair School, that has been an empty eyesore in Adair Park for years. But Mayor Kasim Reed has refused to release the property deed to Atlanta Public Schools because of an ongoing dispute over BeltLine tax payments.

Today on “A Closer Look,” Mary Norwood shared her view of the dispute.

Norwood has already proposed legislation to support the sale.

“In this occurrence, we have the ability, and we must, authorize a quit claim deed,” Norwood said.

She wants the city of Atlanta to do exactly that for this APS property. Her proposal would require 10 additional council members’ votes to override a likely veto from the mayor.

Referring to the ongoing disagreement between Mayor Reed and APS Superintendent Meria Carstarphen about the BeltLine funds, Norwood said, ”this is completely different” and deserves an expeditious timeline.

There are two additional Adair Park-related proposals before the council, so Norwood said she was confident a solution would be found, and she plans to stay closely involved in making sure that happens.
