Deal Continues Opposition to Medicaid Expansion

Florida Governor Rick Scott is the latest GOP governor and Affordable Care Act critic to now say he wants to expand Medicaid. His reversal makes him the seventh Republican governor to support the expansion.

In the meantime, Governor Nathan Deal says he will continue to oppose adding more into Georgia’s Medicaid program.

“My position hasn’t changed. Our financial situation hasn’t changed either, so it is on that basis that I made the judgment call.”

Deal says there are few reasons he would change his mind.

“I don’t know of any outside factors other than maybe action at the federal level that would perhaps modify the status of the program, in terms of federal contributions, or guarantees, or if my suggestion would hold true some flexibility would be perhaps in the form of block grant. I don’t see any action on that front at this point.”

But Deal says he would like to talk to Governor’s in states like Ohio, Michigan and Florida about their reasoning. However, Deal says he thinks the situations in those states are different than in Georgia. Deal has said he’s against the expansion because he believes it’s too costly.
