One DeKalb County Cityhood Initiative Gets A Little Smaller

The City of Tucker has just annexed some commercial property that Vista Grove, the latest city-in-the making in DeKalb County, wanted.

Briarcliff Village shopping center is on the corner of LaVista and Henderson Mill Roads. It’s a hop, skip, and a jump from Northlake Mall, which was a battleground in other, previous cityhood efforts.

“It’s no secret that many of us consider that area, that whole part of town to have historically and perception wise, always been Tucker,” said Mayor Frank Auman, who is thrilled Briarcliff Village is now part of the city.

As for how this affects Vista Grove cityhood efforts?

“One shopping center parcel is not going to have any impact on the city of Vista Grove,” said Andrew Flake, an organizer of the initiative.

The shopping center is on the edge of its planned city. Flake said pulling it out of the Vista Grove map won’t slow the process down. His group’s just started working toward getting state legislative approval to take the question of cityhood to voters.

Auman said there’s no effort right now to annex Northlake Mall into Tucker.

However, the mall is in Vista Grove’s proposed map.
