DeKalb Public Safety Director Cedric Alexander To Step Down

Dr. Cedric Alexander, DeKalb County’s Public Safety Director, announced that he is stepping down from his position at the end of March.
“I’m going to go home to Florida and chill out for a short while and think though some things, and see what opportunities avail themselves,” Alexander said. “I still will be on the national scene … talking about criminal justice and law enforcement and advancing policing.”
Alexander said he is entertaining the idea of working on public policy and changing laws. He looks forward to the prospect of working on his second book at some point this year.
“I certainly would like to be in a place where … you know, sometimes to help create change, you have to create new policies and create new laws,” he said.
DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said there is still work to be done in DeKalb County.
“We’re mindful of the fact that’s an everyday job,” Thurmond said. “That you will never complete it.”
DeKalb County appointed Alexander as police chief four years ago. After rumors surfaced that Alexander was considering a job in Rochester, New York, then-interim CEO Lee May promoted him to public safety director to keep him in Georgia.
Last year, the Chicago Police Department named Alexander as a finalist for their superintendent position, but Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel chose the city’s Chief of Patrol Eddie Johnson.
Alexander rose to national prominence for his advocacy work on police and community relations. He often appeared on CNN as a law enforcement analyst and was a member of President Barack Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.
