Delta Could Take Over Regional Carrier in Memphis

Just months after shuttering Comair, Delta’s wholly-owned regional airline, Delta Air Lines could soon take over another regional carrier.

The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports Pinnacle Airlines could soon emerge from bankruptcy as a Delta subsidiary.

That has some in Memphis worried that Delta will continue to lessen its reliance on the former Northwest Airlines hub.  Delta overtook Northwest in 2008.

Part of the concern stems from Pinnacle’s reliance on small, regional jets.

Delta is aggressively phasing out the 50-seat airplanes because of the aircrafts’ relative inefficiency.

Meanwhile, the airline reported revenue was up 4% in December compared to the same period in 2011.

Executives say that’s due to strong holiday demand and capacity discipline–flying fewer planes, but with more seats filled.
