Donald Trump Continues Squabble With John Lewis

On Monday, the Associated Press reports, President-elect Donald Trump spoke of national unity to a son of Martin Luther King Jr., seeking to ease friction over the president-elect’s squabble with Rep. John Lewis, a protege of the slain civil rights leader. By Tuesday, he was dinging Lewis again.

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Lewis said Trump’s inauguration would be the first he’d skipped during his career as congressman. Renewing the feud that sparked controversy this weekend, Trump tweeted that Lewis’s claim was untrue.

Trump said via Twitter that Lewis had missed George W. Bush’s swearing-in in 2001.

Lewis’ spokeswoman confirmed to the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Lewis had indeed missed Bush’s inauguration.

Trump’s tweets came after he met with Martin Luther King III on the holiday marking the life of the King’s father, the assassinated civil rights icon.

The younger King downplayed the incident Monday, saying that “in the heat of emotion a lot of things get said on both sides.” King, who said he pressed Trump on the need for voting reform to increase participation, called their meeting “constructive.” King said that while he disagreed with the president-elect’s comments where Lewis is concerned, he believes “at some point in this nation, we’ve got to move forward.”
