To celebrate April’s Exotic Meat Month, Bull City Burger and Brewery in Durham, North Carolina, is serving up a beef burger topped with a special ingredient: a real tarantula that you can eat.

Customers who get a chance to try the burger are pulled from a lottery. Once they claim their burger, if they eat the whole thing — tarantula and all — then they get a T-shirt that reads, “I survived the Tarantula Challenge.”

“Closer Look” called the restaurant and spoke with Seth Gross, Grande Burger Flipper and Beer Tester (and owner) of Bull City Burger, to hear more about the unusual burger.

“Every April, we celebrate different types of burgers around the world. And we wanted to teach people that all burgers are not just beef, so we do things like camel, python, elk, beaver — you name it,” Gross said. “And one year, we started talking about what would be the scariest thing you could eat and, a lot of folks, spiders are a big fear.”

The whole experience — the T-shirt, tarantula, burger, and a side of fries — costs $30. As you might expect, there have been some mixed reactions.

“Some folks chicken out, and some folks come in and they take their time, and others just go for it and eat the whole thing real fast,” Gross said. “But we haven’t had anyone not eat their burger yet.”
