Emory University Updates Sexual Assault Policy
Emory University has updated its sexual misconduct policy. Federal officials are reviewing more than 50 colleges, including Emory, to see how they handle sexual assault complaints.

Emory’s revised policy includes a list of sanctions for those its investigations find “responsible” for sexual assault or harassment. The punishments range from community service to expulsion. Emory also clarified the role of the advisor who oversees the complaint process. She will ensure the university responds promptly when students complain they’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted. The policy also encourages anyone who knows about an incident to report it to the Emory police or to local law enforcement.
The U.S. Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights is conducting a compliance review of 55 colleges and universities, including Emory. The civil rights office says the schools are under investigation for “possible violations of federal law over the handling of sexual violence and harassment complaints.”
Emory has said it’s fully cooperating with the review. The university says it updates its sexual misconduct policy every year, with input from students.
