Emory University’s Cinematheque is kicking off “African Americans in American Film,” a series of free screenings and discussions held each Wednesday evening throughout the spring semester.

The series spans from the 1920s to the present. “Within Our Gates,” a silent film from 1920, was the first film to be screened.

Matthew Bernstein, department chair for Film & Media Studies at Emory, and Dr. Nsenga Burton, professor of film studies, joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to talk about the event.

A full list of the screenings can be found here.

The events began Jan. 22 and will run on Wednesdays through April 22.
