0:00: At Morehouse College’s commencement, on Sunday, the ceremony’s speaker Robert F. Smith, a businessman, philanthropist and billionaire, announced he will create a grant to pay off the student loan debt for this year’s entire graduating class. Smith made the announcement at the end of his address to the class of 2019, and challenged alumni to pay the same generosity forward to future generations of graduates. A conversation with Illya Davis, professor of philosophy and African American studies at Morehouse College, and an alumnus of the college, about Smith’s announcement and the larger complexities of the cost of higher education.
22:38: The originally proposed Renew Atlanta project list promised an extensive list of capital projects, totaling almost $1 billion dollars, to improve infrastructure around the city. However, due to a shortfall in funding, many of these projects will not be completed or even implemented as originally planned. Many projects that originally included improvements to crosswalks and better bike lanes have now been simplified to include only road repaving. We’ve heard from city council members and leaders of local NPUS’s. Today, we get reactions from two transportation advocates, Rebecca Serna, executive director of the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and Odetta MacLeish-White, the managing director of the TransFormation Alliance.
