Tuesday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:

  • 0:00: Rose gives a news brief about the annual AJC Peachtree Road Race. Thousands are expected for tomorrow’s 10K race, and safety for the event is a top priority. According to an Atlanta Police Department spokesperson, multiple agencies will be working together including the GBI, MARTA police and other first responders. As of today, all APD officers are on 12-hour shifts, and bomb-sniffing canines will be on patrol. APD officials are also encouraging people to be alert and report any unattended bags or packages.
  • 2:14: The time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the ‘100 Deadliest Days’ for vehicle-related accidents. According to AAA, more than 1,050 people were killed in teen driver crashes in 2016 during that time. We talk about those numbers and what’s behind them with Garrett Townsend, Georgia Public Affairs Director for AAA. We also invite Fatima Jones, defensive driving instructor for A-1 Driving Schools, and Kirk Bressette, general manager for Drive Smart Georgia, to talk about how they teach teens to be safer drivers.
  • 24:41: Our special edition of “Closer Look” continues with a round table discussion with teens about learning to drive and road safety. We hear from Harry, Alba, Daniel and Poojah.

  • 33:15: The Hands-Free Georgia Act, otherwise known as the distracted driving bill, went into effect last Sunday, July 1. While drivers across Georgia adjust to the new law, how are ride-share companies – which require the use of a phone for their services to work – responding? We hear from Sam Bond, general manager for Lyft Southeast, and Evangeline George, public affairs manager for Uber Southeast.
  • 38:01: After speaking with teens about driver safety, we invite some of the parents in to discuss their thoughts, concerns, and perspective as these teens hit the Atlanta roads. We’re joined by Mitch, Danette, Trisha and Charie.

Closer Look is produced by Candace Wheeler, Emilia Brock and Trevor Young.
