Georgians who receive food stamps, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, have more time to report food lost due to power outages during Hurricane Dorian.

Recipients in the 21 counties affected by Dorian will have until Oct. 3 to request credit for food replacement. Those include Appling, Chatham and Wayne counties.

“Families most affected by Hurricane Dorian experienced power outages that could lead them to be without food, and we want to do everything we can to circumvent that possibility,” said Tom Rawlings, Director of the Division of Family and Children Services in a news release.

Recipients must submit a Food Loss Replacement Form along with verification from their utility company. Georgians can submit documents to their local DFCS office.

“Extending the deadline to report food losses, we hope, will relieve families of the anxiety they are experiencing related to what was lost as a result of the storm,” Rawlings said.

A DFCS spokesperson said the Division will have 10 days to process the request. It can take up to two days to get the benefits loaded onto a person’s Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.
