The Choir of Trinity College at Cambridge University in England dates back to the 14th century, and it sings chiefly from the classical liturgical works of the Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions.

The choir is currently on an American tour and will be performing Friday at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta.

On “City Lights,” music director Stephen Layton spoke with host Lois Reitzes and executive director Noel Morris in a live studio interview.

Layton, who has been in his position since 2006, discussed the choir’s mission to keep alive the rich tradition of English choral music, especially from the late medieval and Renaissance periods.

“To keep this music alive, it has to be sung, and it has to be sung in context,” he said.
