The Georgia Building Authority today, led by Gov. Nathan Deal, has voted to put the 2 Peachtree Street building up for sale.

The 41-story office building, which is located near Underground Atlanta and the Five Points MARTA station, was constructed in 1967. The state didn’t take control of it until 1992 through a donation by the Robert W. Woodruff foundation.

At that time, lawmakers expected to pay about $50 million to renovate it, said Steve Stancil, a former state legislator and the executive director of the Georgia Building Authority.

But that price quickly jumped beyond $100 million.

“I, for one, was kinda a pain in the side of folks because we just never seemed to find an ending to where the money was spent,” said Stancil.

He said the idea came up to sell the building when the agency received an unexpected offer.

“Since there was interest unsolicited we thought we would go out and solicit. Just test the market … We’re fishing,” he said.

The building houses more approximately 3,300 state employees.

It’s not clear yet where they would move if the building is sold. But in October the state approved bond money to design a new complex across from the capitol that could open up office space for state agencies.
