Ga. Pit Bull Bill Fails, Cities Can Continue To Ban Breeds

Cities and counties in Georgia will continue to be able to place bans on pit bulls or other dogs.  A bill that would have prohibited local governments from making laws about specific breeds of dogs failed to gain passage this legislative session. The bill passed the Georgia Senate, but never got a vote in the House.

Sen. Ellis Black, R-Valdosta, sponsored the bill. If it would gained approval, the legislation would have allowed cities and counties to still make regulations for dogs they consider vicious, but they would not have been allowed to mention breed. The state would have been the only government that could have made breed-specific laws. Black said he sponsored the bill because a dog should be judged by its behavior alone.

Opponents argued the bill takes away control from local governments. In Georgia, cities and counties with bans or restrictions on pit bulls or other dog breeds include: Lawrenceville, La Grange, College Park, Dawson, Floyd County and Terrell County.
