Ga. School Sports Officials Vote To Limit Football Drills

The Georgia High School Sports Association’s executive committee has voted to cap the time football teams can use on certain drills to try improving athlete safety.

GHSA Executive Director Gary Phillips told The Telegraph of Macon on Monday that the move is similar to measures the NCAA and NFL have taken to address concussion concerns. Phillips, a former high school football coach, says the association is looking to reduce the number of opportunities students have to get hurt.

Aside from time limits for full contact drills, the rules also prohibit teams from conducting the drills more than two consecutive days per week.

The rules also require coaches to have written practice plans that the GHSA may periodically request for inspection. The rules go into effect Aug. 1.
