GBI Investigating 10 Police Shootings In 11 Days

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking in to 10 police shootings in an 11-day period.

Police across Georgia have shot 10 people in a recent 11-day period, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. That’s more than double the usual rate of excessive force cases the bureau is called in to investigate – two a week.

“When you have so many that happen in such a short amount of time it is very taxing,” GBI spokesperson Rich Bahan said. “So we’ve had to reach out to other sister units within the bureau to come in and help out with the investigations.”

Rich said investigators have been pulled from drug and gambling units to help with the high volume of police shooting cases.

“Numbers-wise, we are about where we were with officer involved shootings this time last year,” Bahan said. “Up until about 10 days ago we thought maybe we were going to have fewer this year.”

At least six out of the last 10 shootings have been fatal.
