GDOT Resurfaces Some Roads Near I-85 Bridge Work Site

Weather permitting, the Interstate 85 bridge could reopen this weekend, nearly a month-and-a-half after it collapsed from a fire. However, that doesn’t mean it will be smooth sailing throughout the area near that site.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is resurfacing roads from the Brookwood Split to Clairmont Road.

Some of that work was started during the bridge construction.

“We were able to get new pavement down on the road, months before we anticipated being able to do that because we were able to work with our contractors and push that up,”  GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale said. “So not only are you getting a new bridge, you’re getting a new roadway in this area.”

And although the I-85 bridge will be open ahead of schedule, GDOT and state officials say it is solid.

“This is probably the safest stretch of roadway in Georgia right now.  So no one should feel anxious that this isn’t a safe piece of roadway,” Dale said.

Last month, GDOT awarded nearly three-dozen statewide transportation projects worth $133 million.
