GDOT Plans Variable Speed Limit System On I-285

A plan is in the works that will vary the speed limit on parts Interstate 285 to respond to road and traffic conditions.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has approved construction of a new speed limit system that will respond to weather conditions, everyday traffic, and even accidents and adjust the speed limit on the highway accordingly.

According to GDOT spokesperson Jill Goldberg, “When we know those things are ahead of drivers, we can start to slow them down earlier, and we might be able to keep traffic flowing at a much reduced speed, but that’s better than a stop.”

The new, variable system will cover I-285 north of I-20 and will, during light traffic, bring the speed limit up to 65 miles per hour.

GDOT research shows that, south of I-20, there is less congestion and no need for the variable system. So once the new system is in place on the north half of the Perimeter, the speed limit on the southern half will be 65 miles per hour at all times.

GDOT officials hope the new system will be in place about a year from now.
