Georgia Aquarium Investigates Dolphin Abuse Video

The Georgia Aquarium says it’s investigating whether or not a consultant abused dolphins while training them in Spain. The video, posted by a Spanish animal rights group called SOS Delfines, allegedly shows Jose Barbero kicking and screaming at dolphins.

Aquarium officials say the video may be fake. CEO Mike Levin says it’s very low quality and “crudely edited,” so he’s sending the video to a third party for a forensic analysis.

“If people come forward, we’re willing to listen to all factual-based representations regarding how Jose conducts himself and works with animals,” COO Mark Schafer says. “But everything that we have at this point would indicate that he has a deep concern for them.”

The aquarium says they’ve spoken to Barbero, and he has denied abusing animals over his 35-year career. He has worked with the aquarium as a consultant for the past eight years. The aquarium’s CEO says they have a zero tolerance policy towards mistreatment of animals, and Barbero will be dismissed if he is found guilty.
