The Georgia state Legislature commissioned a statue of King to be erected on their grounds in the summer of 2015. Sadly, the artist chosen for the project, Andy Davis, was killed in a motorcycle accident shortly after taking the commission. Eventually a new artist was selected to take on the job and on Aug. 28, the work will finally be unveiled.

“It’s the most difficult portrait I’ve ever done in my whole career,” sculptor Martin Dawe told “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes. “I ended up using a video loop of an interview with him, over and over again in slow motion, because the pictures didn’t tell you the whole story.”

The statue will stand 8 feet tall and was inspired by a photo chosen by the late Davis of King walking out of the Montgomery, Alabama courthouse, taken in 1958. This will be the first statue of a nonelected figure to be installed on the capital grounds, as well as the first African American.

The sculpture will be unveiled on the Capitol grounds Aug. 28 at 10 a.m.
