Public health officials are reporting overcrowding in emergency rooms across Georgia.

Billy Rawlings, the director of emergency services for both St. Joseph’s and Candler hospitals in Savannah, said they’re trying to move patients out of the hospital faster to help open up more beds.

It’s the same at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany.

And here in Atlanta, Grady Memorial Hospital has had to bring in a mobile emergency room.

“So much busier than I think it’s ever been,” said Dr. Hany Atallah, Grady’s chief of emergency medicine.  “We’ve hit over 500 patients twice. And never in 15 years, have we gotten 500 patients.”

Atallah and others running emergency departments said the main reason is the flu but that doesn’t account for all the cases.

Wellstar officials said since last week, two of their hospitals saw a record number of patients in their ERs within a 24-hour period.
