Georgia has the highest average debt per student among the 50 states, according to numbers released by the White House this week. There are more than 1.4 million borrowers in Georgia, with the average debt per borrower at $30,443.

Only the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., has a higher average per borrower of $40,885.

In a speech this week at Georgia Tech, President Obama unveiled a student aid bill of rights to help protect student borrowers. He told the crowd he chose to give it at the Atlanta school because of Georgia Tech’s bang for its buck.
