Starting this week, soldiers from Fort Stewart will begin shipping out for a deployment to South Korea.

Personnel from the base near Savannah haven’t been sent to the country since the end of the Korean War.

The deployment is part of a regular rotation plan that’s been in effect since 2015. Before that, the U.S. Army had a permanent combat team in South Korea to support the 2nd Infantry Division stationed there.

Major Pete Bogart, public affairs officer at Fort Stewart, said it’s part of a long partnership between the two countries.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to really master our skills training with a very competent army,” he said.

Bogart said about four thousand soldiers from Fort Stewart’s 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division will spend 9 months in the country, where they’ll train alongside the South Korean military.

He stessed the deployment is not a response to recent U.S. tensions with North Korea.

“We watch the news. We’re aware of everything going on. But it doesn’t change our training. It doesn’t change our readiness. It doesn’t change our proficiency of what we do,” he said.

Bogart said it’ll take about a month to get all four-thousand soldiers in place. They’ll be replacing a brigade of soldiers from Fort Hood in Texas.

The deployment kicks off with a ceremony at Fort Stewart scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
