Georgia Supreme Court Says Kemp Can Fill High Court Seat

The two candidates who wanted to run for that seat, John Barrow and Beth Beskin, had filed lawsuits after being denied the option to file election paperwork earlier this year.

Gov. Brian Kemp will now be able to appoint a justice to a seat on the Georgia Supreme Court that will be vacated later this year.

The State Supreme Court has sided with Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who canceled the election after Supreme Court Justice Keith Blackwell announced he would step down in late November after the election is held.

According to Georgia law, since Blackwell will step down before his term ends in December, the governor is allowed to make a judicial appointment in place of an election.
