Gov. Deal: Problems at City Hall Shouldn’t Affect Amazon Decision

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said he doesn’t believe an investigation into the administration of Atlanta’s former mayor or the ransomware attack that hit the city will factor into Amazon’s HQ2 decision.

Atlanta is one of 20 cities Amazon is considering for its second headquarters. The online retailer announced the finalists in January, shortly after Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms took office.

Since then, Bottoms has dealt with a federal investigation of her predecessor’s, Kasim Reed’s administration. Then in March, a ransomware attack hit the city’s computer system, shutting down some services.

Some have wondered if sticky situations like those might scare Amazon away. But Gov. Nathan Deal doubts it.

“The new mayor has been very active in working with us at the state level, and very proactive in terms of new business development,” the governor said after a press conference Tuesday. ” I think she has the right approach to it. These other things will take care of themselves.”

Deal said he doesn’t believe either issue will factor into Amazon’s decision. The online retail giant is expected to choose a city this year.
