Group Leaders Demand Higher Minimum Wages For Minority Women

Many people who are working minimum wage jobs are women, and many of those women are African-American or Latina.

Leaders of several advocacy groups recently joined together in Washington to discuss the issue on women of color working theses jobs. The panelists expressed the need to raise the minimum wage.

Valerie Wilson, director of the Economic Policy Institute’s Program on Race, Ethnicity, and the Economy was on the panel. She discussed the importance of raising the minimum wage for African-American and Latina women with “A Closer Look” hosts Denis O’ Hayer and Rose Scott.

“In thinking about the impact that it has for African-American and Latina women … more than a third of African-American working women would get a raise and more than 40 percent of Latinas. I think when you have that size impact, you can’t deny that there would be some sort of effect on the broader economy as working families, working women have more money to spend – given that our economy is driven largely by consumption.” Wilson said.

Wilson explained how often the wage should be recalculated, her perspective on working Americans surviving on minimum wage and more on “A Closer Look.”
